What is Persimmon

A fruit too astringent to eat.
That is exactly the point.
The Japanese persimmon is packed with tannin — the compound that makes an unripe kaki pucker your mouth shut. Japan has been putting that tannin to work for eight centuries. We put it in a bar of soap.
Kakishibu
Eight hundred years before anyone named the molecule
Kakishibu — the fermented juice of unripe persimmon — has been a Japanese workhorse since the Kamakura period. It waterproofed paper umbrellas, preserved fishing nets, sealed timber, dyed workwear a deep russet brown and clarified sake. Craftsmen kept using it for one recurring reason: cloth and wood treated with kakishibu did not hold on to smells.
Nobody in 13th-century Kyoto had heard of 2-nonenal. They just knew the tannin worked. Modern chemistry has since explained why.
The mechanism
Why it works, in three steps
A small molecule escapes
Skin oils oxidise and form 2-nonenal — a light, volatile aldehyde. Volatile means airborne. Airborne means other people smell it.
Tannin grabs it
Persimmon tannin is a condensed tannin — a large polyphenol carrying dozens of reactive hydroxyl groups that latch on to aldehydes.
It stops being airborne
Bound into a much larger complex, the odour molecule can no longer evaporate. Nothing reaches a nose. It simply rinses away.
Bind it · don't let it evaporate · rinse it away
This is the difference between deodorising and perfuming. A fragrance adds a second smell on top of the first and hopes yours wins. Tannin removes the first one from the air entirely.

Most bathroom shelves hold the first two. Only one of them was designed for the molecule that shows up after 40.

Who it is not for: this is a cosmetic soap, not a medical product. It will not treat excessive sweating, a skin condition, or an odour with a medical cause — for those, see a doctor. And if you love a heavily perfumed shower, you will find this bar quiet on purpose.
The evidence, honestly
What is established, and what is not
Nonenal rises with age
The 2001 study that first identified 2-nonenal in human body odour sampled 22 people aged 26 to 75. It was not detected in the under-40 group, and was present in roughly two-thirds of those over 40.
Tannin binds odour compounds
Persimmon tannin's deodorising action has been measured in laboratory tests against compounds including ammonia, acetic acid, isovaleric acid and nonenal, where it binds them into non-volatile complexes.
What we do not claim
We have not run a clinical trial on this bar. Laboratory binding is not the same as a controlled result on human skin, and how much difference you notice depends on your own skin and routine.
